Duofold Outfits Winter Rangers At Yellowstone National Park

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Dec. 4, 2007 - Duofold, maker of performance base layer, returns to Yellowstone National Park to outfit the park's outdoor employees for the harsh winter conditions. Duofold, which made its first product donation in 2005, shipped its Varitherm performance base layer tops and bottoms to the park's headquarters in Wyoming just in time for the November snow. The donation was made through the Yellowstone Park Foundation, Yellowstone National Park's non-profit partner organization.

"Duofold has a long history of keeping outdoor enthusiasts warm and safe in all types of winter conditions," said Don Burton, director of marketing for Duofold. "By making this donation of our Varitherm base layer, we're also ensuring that the men and women who keep Yellowstone National Park open and available are equally well equipped."

During the winter, Yellowstone National Park employs more than 100 rangers, researchers and maintenance workers who work primarily in outdoor conditions overseeing and maintaining its roads, trails, structures and research projects.

Duofold donated two types of base layer apparel for Yellowstone's varying weather conditions: its Varitherm Expedition Weight base layer for extreme cold conditions and Varitherm Mid Weight base layer for more moderate temperatures. In addition to Duofold's signature warming properties, both Varitherm performance lines feature wicking technology to move moisture quickly away from the skin and 360-degree stretch fabric for comfort and freedom of movement.

"The safety and comfort of our employees is our top priority as we see temperatures already dipping below freezing," said Ken Meyer, safety and health manager for Yellowstone National Park. "With this donation of base layer by Duofold, the risks of cold-related injuries such as hypothermia and frostbite are significantly reduced throughout the winter season."

Duofold Introduces New Consumer Signage Program For Base Layer Collection

New program designed to boost sales by simplifying and streamlining the shopping experience

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Nov. 13, 2007 - Duofold, maker of performance base layer, introduces an innovative consumer signage program designed to streamline the shopping experience and boost sales by encouraging new consumers to try base layer. The program debuts at retail this fall.

"Duofold's new signage program not only helps current consumers of base layer find the products they need easily and quickly, it is also designed to bring new consumers into the category," said Don Burton, director of marketing for Duofold. "Currently, only 12 percent of the population purchases base layer, so there is clearly an opportunity to raise awareness of the need and benefits of wearing base layer. By communicating the many different types of activities where base layer is worn, and by putting our performance fabrics more directly into the hands of potential purchasers, we anticipate seeing a significant boost in sales this season."

The signage was developed in conjunction with an in-depth consumer research program conducted by Duofold in early 2007, which observed consumers from cold weather markets at home and in stores. The research showed that base layer was a difficult category to shop for all levels of consumers.

"Our consumer research was critical to understanding how consumers shop for base layer, and also their decision-making process in choosing one product or brand over another," said Burton. "We found that even the most experienced outdoor enthusiasts struggled with finding base layer in store, and once they found the product, it was difficult for them to distinguish between the different collections. It was very clear we needed to dramatically simplify and clarify the shopping experience."

Duofold's marketing and merchandising teams worked together to develop new signage concepts with three specific goals in mind: make the base layer section easier to find in store, define the different uses of each collection, and communicate technical performance features such as moisture control and odor resistance.

The end result is a creative program incorporating three key merchandising elements. To make the base layer product easier to find in store, Duofold created large signage headers clearly marked by gender as "Cold Weather Layering."

Duofold Surveys Ski Experts On Staying Warm This Winter

Brand partners with Professional Ski Instructors of America to conduct national survey

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Sept. 24, 2007 - Already gearing up for the winter ski season? Take it from the ski professionals - wearing base layer is a must. In a recent survey, more than nine out of 10 ski instructors say they wear base layer to keep warm when temperatures start to drop. And, 14 percent of those surveyed report wearing base layer with its moisture-wicking characteristics as a year-round staple.

Heading into the winter season, Duofold, maker of performance base layer, polled more than 4,200 ski instructors in partnership with the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA), about staying warm both on and off the slopes.

"Base layer is one of the most versatile and hardest working pieces in my gear bag," said Jeb Boyd, PSIA Alpine Team Member and Director of Arc2Arc Alpine Training Center. "It keeps your core warm while also wicking away moisture so you stay dry. I wear it each time I hit the slopes, and for any outdoor activity when temperatures are going to be chilly."

In the survey, an overwhelming 93 percent of respondents report wearing base layer to keep warm, and 90 percent say wearing base layer is very important/important when enjoying the outdoors. In addition to wearing base layer for high-energy snow sports such as skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing, respondents say they also wear base layer for activities such as hiking, camping and bicycling as well as more static activities such as spectating at fall and winter sporting events. While the majority of respondents, 78 percent, say they wear base layer primarily in cold weather, 14 percent report wearing base layer year-round.

"Who knows more about staying warm this upcoming ski season than the men and women who spend countless hours on the slopes as professional ski instructors," said Don Burton, director of marketing for Duofold. "The survey is a great opportunity to learn how the professionals gear up for every kind of snow activity and weather condition."

Base layer styles, most often a crew or turtleneck top along with close-fitting bottoms, typically feature technical performance fibers that not only provide exceptional warmth but also help move moisture away from the skin. Close to 25 percent of the survey respondents rank wicking technology that moves moisture away from the skin and keeps them warm as their top performance feature. Many base layer manufacturers like Duofold offer a variety of fabric options designed for specific activities and weather conditions.

"Knowing the conditions before heading out is not only important for maximizing comfort and enjoyment, but also for personal safety," said Boyd. "The most fundamental safety precaution you can take is dressing for the elements, whether that means extreme cold, high winds or a chance of precipitation - your gear has got to keep you both warm and dry."

From snow-sports equipment to apparel, members of PSIA are often asked for product recommendations out on the slopes. More than 50 percent report being asked for advice at least a couple times a week. Fortunately, more than 79 percent of respondents say they feel informed on the latest technology out in the market, and they are active consumers - 48 percent of respondents report buying new base layer pieces at least once a year. Their top two choices in base layer are Patagonia and Duofold.

"We are very pleased to be the brand of choice for the members of PSIA," said Burton. "They are exceptionally knowledgeable about the importance of wearing base layer for all types of outdoor activities and conditions. Through them, we hope more outdoor enthusiasts will become aware of the importance of wearing base layer so they can stay warm and safe this ski season."
